The Park

Built in the waters in front of the Greeks Ruins, south of the Falcomatà  seaside walk in Reggio Calabria, the Park is located near to the Greek Walls and Roman Thermae and close to the remains of the ancient walls of Reghion.

Visitors can enter the site right from the seaside or diving from a boat. The Park is about 500 squared meters wide, from the seashore down to about 12 meters.

The marine archaeological park is delimited but buoys which can be seen also during night-time. Under the surface the scuba walk is marked by white ropes divers will be able to follow by sight or touch. Along the path there are:

• Anaphors’ pieces and remains;
• Basis and columns from a XVII Century gate;
• Capital which used to be the crowning member of the gate’s arch;
• A not exactly dated column.

the underwater walk, which includes items that could be dated back to Roman age and XVII Century and has been closely monitored and overseen by the Magna Grecia National Museum of Reggio Calabria. In the following phase, scuba volunteers have developed specific skills in order to be able to guide the visitors – as modern scuba ”Cicero” – with unique skills among the national scuba experts.

The Calarcheo Site owns specific goals:

• Environment and archaeological value protection and development, also with specific job market goals.
• Promotion of knowledge of the marine environment biology and underwater archaeological richness;
• Development of educational programmes in order to enlarge cultural understanding of ecology, marine biology and archaeology.
• Development of scientific programmes in order to deepen knowledge and study of the area;
• Promotion of a compatible socio-economic growth, mainly with local traditional activities already in place, the residents and commercial companies with operations in the area.

Divers with disabilities will be able to enter the site directly from the seaside avenue running by the beach. Main enter will be highlighted by two signals holding info about the site, the activities and contacts reference to Scuba Point Reggio Calabria.
